30 kN Self-Contained Diesel Hydraulic Capstan Winch
30 kN Self-Contained Diesel Hydraulic Capstan Winch
A 30 kN self-contained diesel hydraulic capstan winch built in Yatala as the compact member of the ACW capstan family, with footswitch and touch screen control and every cable pull recorded to USB.
Capstan Winch Project Overview
A custom-built 30 kN self-contained diesel hydraulic capstan for underground cable hauling
A 30 kN self-contained diesel hydraulic capstan winch, the compact member of the ACW cable hauling capstan family. It follows the same proven layout as the 60 kN units working across Australia and Indonesia, a diesel engine and hydraulic power pack in a sound-proof enclosure driving a capstan head, footswitch and touch screen control and every pull recorded to USB, but in a lighter package sized for smaller cables and shorter conduit runs. That makes it the unit crews choose for fibre, communications and low-voltage cable installation where a 60 kN machine is more than the job needs and harder to move around tight sites. Engineered, built and tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown
An in-depth look at the 30 kN self-contained diesel hydraulic capstan winch's performance and technical capabilities
The capstan head, gearbox and hydraulic motor sit in a compact fabricated frame with the diesel engine, hydraulic pump and reservoir behind sound-attenuated panels, and the whole unit is light enough to tow or lift with a small crane onto a tray truck. Because the rope is driven by friction around the capstan barrel rather than stored on a drum, rope length is unlimited and pulling force stays constant from the first metre to the last.
Control is identical to the larger units so crews can move between machines without retraining: a footswitch runs the pull with both hands free for the rope, and the touch screen sets speed and a tension limit for the cable being installed. Line tension and distance are displayed live and logged to USB for the client’s quality assurance file, and the drive stops if the set tension is exceeded. The unit was load tested at Yatala before delivery.
Other Winch Applications
Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.
Beyond construction, a compact 30 kN diesel capstan suits telecommunications and utility contractors pulling fibre and low-voltage cable in streets and estates where access is tight.
Trailing cable and pipe pulls around mine sites and processing plants – a self-contained diesel capstan that works where there is no site power.
Cable pulls along pipeline easements and remote plant sites – skid-mounted diesel hydraulic capstans with tension recording for QA.
Project Conclusion
The 30 kN self-contained diesel hydraulic capstan winch gives smaller cable installers the same recorded, certified pull as the 60 kN units in a package that fits the job. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.
Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about choosing a 30 kN capstan for cable installation.
When is a 30 kN capstan the right choice over the 60 kN unit?
When the cables are smaller and the pulls shorter, as in fibre, communications and low-voltage work. The 30 kN unit is lighter, easier to position on tight urban sites and cheaper to run, while still recording every pull to the same standard as the larger machine.
Does the 30 kN unit record pull data like the 60 kN capstan?
Yes. It uses the same monitoring system: line tension and distance are shown live on the touch screen and saved to USB for each pull, so the contractor can give the asset owner proof the cable stayed within its rated tension.
How is the capstan moved between pits?
The compact frame has lifting points for a small crane or forklift and is light enough for a tray truck or plant trailer, so it moves between pits and joint bays without heavy transport. It carries its own diesel, so no generator is needed on site.
What controls does the operator have?
A footswitch starts and stops the pull so both hands stay on the rope, and the touch screen sets speed and tension limits. An emergency stop is fitted at the operator station and the drive stops automatically if the set tension is exceeded.
Can the capstan pull heavier cable if needed?
Up to its 30 kN rating. For heavier power cables and long conduit runs ACW recommends the 60 kN self-contained capstan, which shares the same controls and monitoring so crews can use both machines interchangeably.
Pulling Cable Off-Grid?
Tell us the cable size, the pull length and how remote the site is. Our RPEQ engineers will size a certified self-contained capstan winch for it.
