Declutch Winch Project Overview

A custom-built 35 kN electric hauling winch with full drum declutch for general hauling

A 35 kN electric hauling winch fitted with a full drum declutch, built for general construction hauling where the crew wants to pull rope off the drum by hand between pulls. With the drum declutched the rope free-spools so a rigger can walk it out to the load, hook up and re-engage the drive for the pull, which saves waiting for the motor to pay out slack on every cycle. The winch carries 100 m of rope, runs from a single-phase supply and sits on a compact frame with a yellow control box. Engineered, manufactured and load tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown

An in-depth look at the 35 kN electric hauling winch with drum declutch's performance and technical capabilities

The winch is a fabricated steel frame carrying a grooved drum with 100 m of rope for 35 kN on the working layer, driven through a gearbox by a single-phase electric motor. The declutch is a manual dog clutch between the gearbox and the drum, operated by a lever on the frame: with the clutch disengaged the drum turns freely on its bearings for hand pay-out, and with it engaged the drive and brake act on the drum as normal.

Safety around a free-spooling drum comes down to the brake and the interlock. A spring-applied brake holds the drum whenever the motor is stopped and the clutch is engaged, and the clutch lever is arranged so it cannot be disengaged while the winch is under load. Controls are housed in the frame-mounted yellow control box with an emergency stop, and the winch was load tested at Yatala before delivery.

Other Winch Applications

Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.

Beyond construction, a declutch hauling winch suits vehicle recovery, boat ramps and workshop pulls where rigging speed matters as much as line pull.

Marine Corps
Line 182

Hauling vessels onto ramps and trailers and moving gear around the wharf – electric winches with drum declutch so the rope pays out freely by hand between pulls.

STS Crane 1
Line 182

Cable pulls and equipment hauling at substations, pump stations and treatment plants – free-spool payout speeds up rigging and the brake holds every load.

Project Conclusion

The 35 kN electric hauling winch with drum declutch trades a little complexity for a lot of rigging time saved on every pull. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.

Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

See What Our Clients Say

The drum declutch was the reason we went with Australian Certified Winches. Our crew pulls the rope out by hand, hooks up and hauls, without waiting on the motor to pay out. The 35 kN electric hauling winch has been solid on site and came fully certified.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about drum declutch hauling winches.

    What does drum declutch mean?

A manual clutch between the gearbox and the drum can be disengaged so the drum turns freely. The rigger pulls rope off by hand, walks it to the load and hooks on, then re-engages the clutch and the winch drives and brakes the drum normally.

Yes, when the winch is designed for it. The clutch lever is interlocked so it cannot be released while the rope is under load, and the spring-applied brake holds the drum whenever the clutch is engaged and the motor is stopped.

Construction sites often have only single-phase power at the work face. A single-phase motor lets the winch run from a standard site supply or generator without three-phase cabling.

The drum stores 100 m of wire rope at 35 kN line pull. The declutch makes the full length usable in practice, because the crew can pay out as much as they need by hand rather than running the motor.

Yes. A drum declutch can be built into most ACW hauling winches, electric or hydraulic, where the application involves repeated rigging. ACW sizes the clutch and interlock to the winch capacity.
