Stainless Winches Project Overview

Two custom-built 25 kN 316L stainless steel winches for a chemical plant conveyor platform

Two 25 kN electric hauling winches, custom designed and built for manoeuvring a conveyor platform inside a fertiliser chemical plant. The environment destroys painted steel, so both winches were manufactured entirely from 316L stainless steel, including the frames, drums and the vented housings. A cover with side ventilation slots protects each vertical electric motor from falling product while letting it breathe, and each winch has a remote brake release so that one winch can haul the platform while the other, brake released, lets its rope spool out under light tension. Engineered, fabricated and load tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown

An in-depth look at the 25 kN 316L stainless steel electric hauling winch's performance and technical capabilities

Every structural part of each winch, the base, side plates, drum and motor housing, is 316L stainless steel, welded and finished for chemical exposure. The drums store 100 m of rope for 25 kN on the working layer, and the vertical motors sit inside stainless enclosures with side ventilation slots and a solid top so falling material cannot settle on the motor while cooling air still flows.

The two winches work as a pair on the platform. Each has a spring-applied brake with a remote release, so the operator can release the brake on the trailing winch and let its rope pay out under light tension while the leading winch hauls the platform toward it, then swap roles to move back. Single-phase drives and a shared control philosophy keep operation simple, and both units were load tested at Yatala and delivered with certification.

Other Winch Applications

Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.

Beyond manufacturing, full stainless steel winches suit marine, food processing and water treatment sites where painted steel will not survive.

Project Conclusion

The 25 kN 316L stainless steel electric hauling winches solved a corrosion problem with materials and a positioning problem with a remote brake release, in one paired design. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.

Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

Painted winches did not last in our fertiliser plant. The two 25 kN 316L stainless steel electric hauling winches Australian Certified Winches built have shrugged off the chemical environment, and the remote brake release lets one winch haul the platform while the other pays out under light tension exactly as designed.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about stainless steel winches for corrosive environments.

Why build the whole winch in 316L stainless steel?

Fertiliser chemicals attack painted and galvanised steel quickly, and touching up coatings inside a live plant is impractical. 316L stainless resists the chemical environment without coatings, so the frames, drums and housings last the life of the plant.

It shields the vertical electric motor from product falling from the conveyor above while side ventilation slots let cooling air through. The solid top and open sides keep dust and chemicals off the motor without causing it to overheat.

One winch hauls while the other has its brake released remotely so its rope spools out under light tension. To move the platform back the roles swap. This keeps the platform under control in both directions without slack rope on the floor.

It lets the operator release the trailing winch from the control position rather than walking to it, so both winches are managed by one person from a safe spot away from the moving platform.

Yes. Most ACW electric and hydraulic winches can be fabricated in 304 or 316L stainless for marine, chemical and food industry sites, with stainless fasteners, drums and enclosures to match.
