35 kN Hydraulic Hoisting Winches
35 kN Hydraulic Hoisting Winches
35 kN hydraulic hoisting winches built in Yatala for jib cranes at a mine site, running from the site hydraulic power pack with 100 m of rope capacity and heavy-duty steel construction for continuous mining duty.
Hoisting Winch Project Overview
Custom-built 35 kN hydraulic winches for jib crane hoisting in a mine
A pair of 35 kN hydraulic hoisting winches built for a jib crane in a mine processing plant, where the crane lifts pumps, gearboxes and screens in and out of position during maintenance. The client wanted hydraulic drive so the winches could run from the plant hydraulic supply already at the crane, with the smooth speed control and high stall torque that hydraulics give for lifting. Each winch carries 100 m of rope, and both were built to the same drawing so parts are interchangeable. Engineered, manufactured and load tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop before installation on the crane.

Operational & Technical Breakdown
An in-depth look at the 35 kN hydraulic hoisting winches' performance and technical capabilities
Each winch is a fabricated steel frame carrying a grooved drum, planetary gearbox and hydraulic motor, painted in high-visibility yellow for the plant. The drum and rope anchor were sized for 35 kN on the working layer with 100 m of rope, and the frame footprint and bolt pattern were matched to the crane structure so the winches dropped straight onto the mounting plates.
Hoisting duty demands a brake that holds every time. A spring-applied, hydraulically released brake sits on the drive train and a counterbalance valve on the motor prevents the load running away if a hose fails. The hydraulic port connections were documented on an annotated diagram supplied with the winches so the site fitters could plumb them correctly, and both units were load tested at Yatala with certificates issued before dispatch.
Other Winch Applications
Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.
Beyond mining, hydraulic hoisting winches of this type suit jib cranes, davits and maintenance hoists in any plant that already has a hydraulic supply.
Jib crane and davit hoisting on civil sites, precast yards and bridge works – hydraulic winches with fail-safe braking for suspended loads.
Workshop jib cranes, assembly hoists and heavy component handling – compact hydraulic winches that run from an existing plant power pack.
Project Conclusion
The 35 kN hydraulic hoisting winches gave the mine a matched pair of certified crane hoists that run from the plant hydraulics and share spares. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.
Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about hydraulic hoisting winches for jib cranes and plant maintenance.
Why use hydraulic rather than electric winches on a jib crane?
The crane already had a hydraulic supply, so a hydraulic winch avoids running new power and control cabling. Hydraulic motors also give very fine speed control at low speed and high torque from a standstill, which is exactly what a hoist needs when landing heavy parts.
How is the load held on a hydraulic hoisting winch?
Two ways. A spring-applied brake on the drive train engages whenever hydraulic pressure is removed, and a counterbalance valve on the motor stops the drum turning under load if a hose or the supply fails. The load stays where it is until the operator moves it.
Why were two identical winches supplied?
The jib crane uses two hoists, and building both to the same drawing means the site only needs one set of spares and one manual. It also allowed both units to be tested side by side at Yatala before delivery.
What hydraulic flow and pressure do the winches need?
The motor displacement and gearbox ratio were selected around the pressure and flow available at the crane, and an annotated port diagram was supplied so the fitters connected pressure, return and brake release lines correctly. ACW can re-rate the winches for a different supply if the plant changes.
Are the winches certified for lifting?
Yes. Both hoisting winches were designed to AS 1418, load tested at Yatala and delivered with test certificates and RPEQ engineering sign-off, ready for the mine site lifting equipment register.
Lifting on a Jib Crane?
Tell us the load, the lift height and the hydraulic supply. Our RPEQ engineers will size certified hoisting winches for it.
