Chain Hauling Winch Project Overview

A custom-built 120 kN hydraulic winch and sheave set for conveyor chain removal

A 120 kN hydraulic hauling winch supplied with a matched set of three sheave blocks for pulling conveyor chain during maintenance at a mine processing plant. Dragging a long run of heavy chain out of a conveyor is a slow, awkward job with mobile plant; this package lets the maintenance crew anchor the winch, rig the blocks and haul the chain out under full control. The winch runs from the site hydraulic supply, is operated from a radio remote so nobody stands near the rope, and carries 200 m of wire rope. Engineered, built and load tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown

An in-depth look at the 120 kN hydraulic hauling winch's performance and technical capabilities

The winch is built on a heavy fabricated base with certified lift points and forklift pockets so it can be positioned at the conveyor and anchored quickly. Drum, gearbox and brake were sized for 120 kN line pull with 200 m of rope, and the rated capacity is marked on the machine at 12,000 kg. The three sheave blocks were designed as part of the same system, with pin sizes, side plates and swivel eyes matched to the rope and to the anchor points available around the conveyor.

Hydraulic drive gives high stall torque and smooth control for a load that tends to snatch as chain breaks free. A 280 bar valve manifold with counterbalance and pressure relief protects the drive, a spring-applied brake holds the load when the control is released, and an Autec radio remote lets the operator run the pull from a safe vantage point clear of the rope and the chain.

Other Winch Applications

Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.

Beyond mining, a hydraulic hauling winch with a matched sheave set suits any plant shutdown or heavy maintenance pull where a controlled, certified line pull beats improvising with mobile equipment.

Project Conclusion

The 120 kN hydraulic hauling winch and sheave block set shows how ACW designs the whole rigging system, not just the winch, so a difficult maintenance task becomes routine. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.

Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

Changing conveyor chain used to be a slow, heavy job for us. The 120 kN hydraulic hauling winch and sheave blocks Australian Certified Winches built pull the chain out smoothly from the site power pack, and the whole set arrived certified and ready to work.

ACW designed the sheave block arrangement with the winch as one system, which is what made the chain pulls controllable. Built heavy for the mine, tested in Yatala and supported by engineers who understood the job first time.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about hydraulic hauling winches and sheave block sets for conveyor maintenance.

Why supply sheave blocks with the winch?

Chain removal rarely happens in a straight line. The three sheave blocks let the crew redirect the pull around the conveyor structure and double the line where more force is needed, and because ACW designed the blocks with the winch they are rated and pinned to suit the rope and the anchor points on site.

The winch was built to run from the plant’s existing hydraulic power pack. ACW matched the motor displacement and the 280 bar valve manifold to that supply, so no separate power unit is needed. Where site hydraulics are not available, the same winch can be paired with an electric or diesel power pack.

An Autec radio remote controls the pull, so the operator can stand back from the rope and watch the chain rather than the winch. A spring-applied brake holds the load whenever the control is released or supply pressure is lost.

Yes. At 120 kN line pull and 200 m of rope it also handles belt changes, pulley and gearbox moves and general heavy component hauling around the plant. ACW can supply additional sheave blocks or anchor frames to suit other locations.

The winch and blocks were designed to AS 1418 and AS 4991, load tested at Yatala and supplied with test certificates, a rated capacity plate and a full manual. ACW’s RPEQ engineers sign off the design so the equipment meets site entry requirements.
