Multi-Purpose Winch Project Overview

A custom-built 30 kN electro-hydraulic winch for conveyor belt maintenance

A one-off 30 kN electro-hydraulic winch designed primarily for conveyor belt maintenance in a mine processing plant. The winch works alongside the client’s other equipment to handle vertical bucket conveyors during belt replacement, taking the weight of the belt and buckets while sections are cut, pulled through and rejoined. It is powered by a three-phase hydraulic power pack built into the frame and controlled from a 10 m fully proportional wandering pendant, so the fitter running the change can stand where the belt is and still feel the load. With 300 m of rope on the drum and a drive rated for both hoisting and hauling, it is a genuinely multi-purpose machine. Engineered, built and load tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown

An in-depth look at the 30 kN electro-hydraulic multi-purpose winch's performance and technical capabilities

The drum, gearbox and hydraulic motor sit inside a yellow mesh cage on a fabricated steel base, with the electric motor, pump and reservoir alongside and a control cabinet on the frame. The drum stores 300 m of rope for 30 kN, enough to reach along a long conveyor gallery from a single anchor point, and the base has lifting points so the whole unit can be craned to the next maintenance location.

Because the winch hoists as well as hauls, the drive was specified to hoisting standards. A fail-safe spring-applied brake holds the load on the drum, a counterbalance valve controls lowering, and the proportional valve driven from the 10 m wandering pendant gives fine speed control in both directions. The electro-hydraulic arrangement means the winch needs only a three-phase connection, with all hydraulics contained on the skid, and it was load tested at Yatala in both hoisting and hauling modes.

Other Winch Applications

Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.

Beyond mining, an electro-hydraulic multi-purpose winch suits shutdown crews, quarries and manufacturing plants that need one machine for both lifting and pulling during maintenance.

Project Conclusion

The 30 kN electro-hydraulic multi-purpose winch gives the plant a single certified machine that hoists and hauls during belt changes, controlled from wherever the fitter needs to stand. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.

Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about multi-purpose winches for conveyor belt maintenance.

How is the winch used during a belt change?

The winch takes the weight of the belt and bucket string while sections are cut and pulled through, hoisting or hauling as the job requires. The 300 m of rope lets it work along the conveyor from one anchor point, and the wandering pendant lets the fitter control it from the work face.

Hydraulic drive gives smooth proportional control and high torque from a standstill, which suits inching a heavy belt into position. Driving the pump with an electric motor means the winch still only needs a three-phase plug and carries its own hydraulics on the skid.

Yes. It was specified for hoisting as well as hauling, with a spring-applied brake and counterbalance valve rated for lifting duty and load tested in both modes at Yatala. It should be used with certified rigging and within its rated capacity.

It lets the operator walk with the load rather than stand at the winch, while keeping fully proportional control of speed and direction. On a belt change that means the person watching the belt is the one controlling the pull.

The complete unit, winch, power pack and cabinet, sits on one base with lifting points, so site cranes or a forklift can move it between conveyors. Only a three-phase connection is needed at the new location.
