20 kN Electric Pontoon Hauling Winch
20 kN Electric Pontoon Hauling Winch
A 20 kN electric pontoon hauling winch built in Yatala to move and position a floating pontoon on a hydro dam, with 100 m of rope capacity, a heavy-duty steel frame and a fail-safe brake for controlled hauling over water.
Pontoon Hauling Winch Project Overview
A custom-built 20 kN electric winch for hauling a floating pontoon into position
Four 20 kN electric hauling winches built for manoeuvring a floating pontoon within a dam on a pumped hydro construction project. The pontoon carries plant and personnel across the reservoir and has to be walked into position and held there while work goes on, so a winch at each corner pulls against an anchor line and the four together move the pontoon like a spider on its web. Each winch carries 200 m of rope, runs on a compact blue frame with a yellow guard and was built to the same drawing so the four behave identically. Engineered, manufactured and load tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown
An in-depth look at the 20 kN electric pontoon hauling winch's performance and technical capabilities
Each winch is a fabricated steel frame with a grooved drum for 200 m of rope at 20 kN, a gearbox and a vertical electric motor, with a yellow drum guard and lifting points for placing the winch at the pontoon corner. The four units share every component, so one set of spares covers the fleet and the winches can be swapped between corners.
Positioning a pontoon means pulling on one or two winches while the others pay out, so each winch has a spring-applied brake that holds its line whenever the motor stops and controls that allow the winches to be operated individually. The drives were selected for steady, low-speed hauling against the drag of the pontoon rather than for speed, and all four were load tested together at Yatala before delivery to the dam.
Other Winch Applications
Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.
Beyond construction, multi-winch pontoon positioning systems suit dredging, marine construction and floating plant on dams and harbours.
Hauling and positioning marina pontoons, floating walkways and work platforms – compact electric winches with corrosion protection for life beside the water.
Moving feed barges and fish farm pontoons between pens and moorings – electric hauling winches sized for steady pulls in open water.
Project Conclusion
The four 20 kN electric pontoon hauling winches give the project a simple, certified way to move and hold a work pontoon anywhere on the dam. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.
Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about pontoon positioning winches.
How do four winches move a pontoon?
Each winch sits at a corner of the pontoon with its rope run to a fixed anchor. Hauling on one or two winches while the opposite winches pay out pulls the pontoon across the water, and holding all four keeps it on station.
Why 200 m of rope on each winch?
The anchors are set well away from the working area so the pontoon can move a long way in any direction. 200 m per winch covers the working range on the dam with margin for changing water levels.
What holds the pontoon in position?
Each winch has a spring-applied brake that locks its drum whenever the motor stops, so with all four braked the pontoon is held on four independent lines without any motor running.
Why were all four built identical?
Identical winches share spares, behave the same at each corner and can be swapped if one needs service. Building them together at Yatala also let them be tested side by side under the same load.
Can the winches be moved to another pontoon later?
Yes. The compact frames have lifting points and a simple bolt-down base, so the winches can be relocated to another pontoon or a shore mounting when the project moves on.
Positioning a Pontoon?
Tell us the pontoon size, the haul distance and the water conditions. Our RPEQ engineers will size a certified pontoon hauling winch for it.
