Slipway Upgrade Project Overview

A custom-built 30 kN electric hauling winch replacing outdated slipway machinery

A one-off 30 kN electric hauling winch designed to replace outdated machinery on a commercial slipway. The old winch had reached the end of its life and the yard needed a modern, certified replacement that would fit the existing winch house and haul its heaviest vessels. The new winch pulls 30 kN on a single line, which over a rolling load on the slipway incline hauls a 250 kN vessel and cradle up a 5 degree grade. It is variable speed, powered from a single-phase supply, and carries 150 m of rope. The winch, control cabinet and pendant were engineered, built and tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown

An in-depth look at the 30 kN electric slipway hauling winch's performance and technical capabilities

ACW started from the slipway itself: a 250 kN rolling load on a 5 degree incline, with cradle friction, resolves to a line pull well within 30 kN, so the winch was sized with margin rather than oversized. The drum stores 150 m of rope for the full slipway length, mounted in a fabricated marine steel frame with a gearbox and single-phase motor and a footprint arranged to bolt down where the old winch stood.

The control cabinet carries a variable speed drive and a panel with local and remote selection, in and out controls and a speed dial, plus an emergency stop, so the operator can haul from the winch house or from a remote position with a view of the cradle. A spring-applied brake holds the vessel on the grade whenever the winch stops. The complete system was load tested at Yatala with certificates supplied for the yard.

Other Winch Applications

Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.

Beyond marine, replacement winch packages with modern variable speed controls suit any site running ageing hauling machinery on ramps, inclines and rail tracks.

Project Conclusion

The 30 kN electric slipway hauling winch replaced outdated machinery with a right-sized, certified winch and modern controls in the same winch house. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.

Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

See What Our Clients Say

Our slipway was running on machinery that was well past its best. Australian Certified Winches worked out that a 30 kN electric slipway hauling winch on a single line would move our heaviest boats up the grade, built it to run off single phase and had it certified and installed without drama.
Ross Tanner
Owner, Commercial Slipway
ACW did the incline and rolling load calculations for us before recommending the 30 kN slipway hauling winch, then built and tested it in Yatala. The variable speed makes haul-outs controlled and the whole job was well supported.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about replacing an existing slipway winch.

How was the winch size worked out?

From the slipway, not the old winch. ACW took the heaviest vessel and cradle, about 250 kN, the 5 degree grade and the rolling friction of the cradle, and calculated the line pull needed. 30 kN on a single line covers it with margin.

Yes. The frame footprint, rope exit height and cabinet position were designed around the existing winch house so the new machine bolted down where the old one stood, with minimal civil work.

The slipway only had single-phase supply at the winch house. The motor and variable speed drive were chosen to deliver the required pull from that supply, avoiding the cost of running three-phase cabling.

A variable speed drive gives smooth starts and adjustable speed, and the panel offers local operation at the cabinet or remote operation from a station with a view of the cradle. A spring-applied brake holds the load whenever the winch stops.

Yes. The winch was designed and load tested to AS 1418 at Yatala and delivered with test certificates and RPEQ sign-off, giving the yard current compliance documentation that the old machine lacked.
