90 kN Electric Slipway Hauling Winch
90 kN Electric Slipway Hauling Winch
A 90 kN electric slipway hauling winch built in Yatala for a commercial slipway, hauling large vessels up the cradle rails with 140 m of rope, three-phase electric drive, marine-grade coated steel and a fail-safe brake.
Slipway Hauling Winch Project Overview
A custom-built 90 kN electric hauling winch for a heavy commercial slipway
A 90 kN electric hauling winch for a commercial slipway handling the heaviest vessels in the yard. Where smaller slipways get by with 30 or 50 kN, this yard needed a single winch with the line pull to bring large steel hulls up the cradle rails in one controlled haul, and the brake capacity to hold them on the grade. The winch carries 140 m of rope on a large drum, is driven by a three-phase motor through a heavy planetary gearbox, and was finished in marine-grade coatings for years beside the water. Engineered, manufactured and load tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown
An in-depth look at the 90 kN electric slipway hauling winch's performance and technical capabilities
The winch is built on a heavy fabricated frame with a large-diameter grooved drum for 140 m of rope at 90 kN, machined drum shafts on substantial bearings, and a planetary gearbox coupled to a vertical three-phase motor. The frame carries lifting lugs and a bolt pattern matched to the slipway winch house foundation, and the rope exit and guide were set for the slipway’s fleet angle so the rope spools evenly under a heavy, slow pull.
Holding a large vessel on an incline is the critical duty. A spring-applied brake on the drive train locks the drum the moment the operator stops or power fails, and the brake was proven under rated load during testing at Yatala. Motor and gearbox were selected for the long, continuous haul of a big cradle rather than speed, and the winch was delivered with test certificates and RPEQ sign-off for the yard.
Other Winch Applications
Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.
Beyond marine, a 90 kN electric hauling winch suits heavy inclined hauling in shipyards, dry docks and industrial plants where a single high-capacity pull is preferred.
Hauling offshore support vessels and crew boats up slipways for survey and refit – high-capacity electric winches built for heavy cradle loads.
Launch and recovery winches for shipbuilders and heavy fabrication yards – three-phase electric drives with variable speed for controlled moves on the rails.
Project Conclusion
The 90 kN electric slipway hauling winch gives the yard a single certified machine with the pull and brake capacity for its largest hulls. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.
Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about high capacity slipway hauling winches.
When does a slipway need a 90 kN winch?
When the cradle and vessel together exceed what 30 to 50 kN winches can haul up the grade with a safe margin. Steel commercial hulls, tugs and larger fishing vessels typically push a yard into this class of winch.
How is the vessel held once it is out of the water?
A spring-applied brake on the drive train engages whenever the motor stops, holding the cradle on the slipway grade indefinitely. The yard can then add cradle chocks or stops before releasing the rope.
Why a vertical motor arrangement?
Mounting the motor vertically on the gearbox keeps the winch footprint compact for the winch house and keeps the motor clear of water and debris at floor level, which extends its life in a slipway environment.
What rope does the winch carry?
The drum stores 140 m of wire rope sized for 90 kN line pull. The large drum diameter keeps the rope bend radius generous, which extends rope life on a slipway where the same section of rope works hardest on every haul.
Can ACW match a winch to my slipway?
Yes. ACW works from the vessel and cradle weights, the slipway grade and the rope run to size the line pull, drum and brake, then builds and load tests the winch at Yatala before delivery.
Hauling Heavy Vessels?
Tell us the vessel weight, the slipway grade and the cradle arrangement. Our RPEQ engineers will size a certified slipway hauling winch for it.
