Pump Retrieval Winch Project Overview
A custom-built 40 kN electric hoisting winch for submersible pump retrieval
A one-off 40 kN electric hoisting winch designed to mount on an angle inside a water treatment facility, where it is used during maintenance to retrieve the submersible pumps from their wells. Pump retrieval is a slow, careful lift in a confined space: the pump has to come up its guide rails without snagging, stop exactly at the platform and go back down the same way, so the winch was given infinitely variable speed control and a mounting frame that sets the rope angle to the guide rails. The winch carries 100 m of rope, runs from the plant’s electric supply and was engineered, built and load tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown
An in-depth look at the 40 kN electric hoisting winch's performance and technical capabilities
The winch is a fabricated steel frame carrying a grooved drum for 100 m of rope at 40 kN, a gearbox and an electric motor, with a yellow guard over the drum and a base designed to bolt to the facility structure at the angle that lines the rope up with the pump guide rails. Setting the angle at the mounting rather than with sheaves keeps the rope path short and the fleet angle small, so the rope spools evenly and the pump comes up straight.
Control is through a variable speed drive with a pendant, giving infinitely variable hoisting and lowering speed so operators can creep a pump onto its seat or clear a snag at walking pace. A spring-applied brake holds the pump whenever the motor stops or power is lost, and the winch was load tested to AS 1418 at Yatala and supplied with certificates for the plant’s lifting equipment register.
Other Winch Applications
Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.
Beyond utilities, angled-mount hoisting winches with variable speed suit pump stations, sumps and process tanks in mining and industrial plants where equipment has to be lifted along a fixed path.
Pontoon manoeuvring, barge positioning and heavy plant hauling on civil and infrastructure sites – variable-speed electric drive for controlled pulls on inclines.
Pump and equipment retrieval from sumps, shafts and process tanks – electric hoisting winches with fail-safe brakes and variable speed for controlled lifts.
Project Conclusion
The 40 kN electric hoisting winch made pump retrieval at the water treatment plant a controlled, repeatable lift instead of a crane hire and a day’s shutdown. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.
Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about pump retrieval winches for water and wastewater plants.
Why mount a hoisting winch on an angle?
The submersible pumps travel up guide rails that are not vertical to the winch position. Mounting the winch on an angle lines the rope up with the rails without extra sheaves, so the rope path stays short, the pump comes up straight and nothing snags in the well.
What does infinitely variable speed give the operator?
Full control from a crawl to normal hoisting speed. Operators can inch a pump off its seat, slow down as it clears the well and land it gently on the platform, which protects the pump and the guide rails.
How is the pump held if power fails mid-lift?
A spring-applied brake on the drive engages the moment the motor stops or power is lost, holding the pump wherever it is in the well until power is restored and the operator continues the lift.
Can the winch be used for other lifts at the plant?
Yes, within its 40 kN rating and along the rope path the mounting allows. It is certified hoisting equipment, so it can lift screens, valves and other equipment that sit in line with the winch.
Can ACW design a winch for our pump wells?
Yes. ACW works from the pump weight, well depth, guide rail geometry and platform layout to size the winch, set the mounting angle and select the controls, then builds and load tests the winch at Yatala before delivery.
Retrieving Pumps for Service?
Tell us the pump weight, the lift height and the mounting angle. Our RPEQ engineers will size a certified electric hoisting winch for it.
