50 kN Electric Slipway Hauling Winch
50 kN Electric Slipway Hauling Winch
Two 50 kN electric slipway hauling winches built in Yatala for a commercial slipway, each with 140 m of rope, three-phase electric drive, marine-grade coated steel and a fail-safe brake for controlled haul-outs.
Slipway Winches Project Overview
Two custom-built 50 kN electric hauling winches for a commercial slipway
Two 50 kN electric hauling winches for a commercial slipway, built as a matched pair so the yard could haul its larger vessels up the cradle rails with two ropes sharing the load. Each winch carries 140 m of rope and runs from a three-phase supply through a control cabinet mounted on the frame, with a fail-safe brake that holds the cradle on the grade whenever the motor stops. The winches were built to the same drawing at Yatala, tested together and delivered as a set, so the slipway operator has one manual, one set of spares and two machines that behave identically.

Operational & Technical Breakdown
An in-depth look at the 50 kN electric slipway hauling winch's performance and technical capabilities
Each winch is a fabricated steel frame with a grooved drum, gearbox and motor on a common base, painted in marine-grade coatings for the salt air of a working slipway. The drums store 140 m of rope for 50 kN on the working layer, with rope anchors and guides arranged for the low fleet angle of a long slipway pull so the rope spools evenly from the first metre to the last.
Vessel haul-outs are slow and heavy, so the gearing favours line pull and control over speed, and a spring-applied brake on each drive locks the cradle on the rails the moment the operator stops. Both winches were load tested at Yatala as a pair, with the brakes proven under rated load and certificates issued for the yard’s lifting equipment register before installation.
Other Winch Applications
Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.
Beyond marine, paired electric hauling winches suit any application where a heavy load has to be pulled up an incline on two ropes, from boat ramps to funiculars and track-mounted plant.
Hauling work boats and intake maintenance vessels up ramps at dams and water storages – electric slipway winches with fail-safe brakes for the grade.
Launch and recovery of barges, work boats and floating plant on marine construction sites – three-phase electric hauling winches sized for the cradle load.
Project Conclusion
The 50 kN electric slipway hauling winches gave the yard two identical, certified machines that haul its heaviest vessels with margin. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.
Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about twin winch slipway hauling systems.
Why use two winches on a slipway instead of one larger unit?
Two ropes on the cradle share the load and keep it square on the rails, and two 50 kN winches are easier to install and service than a single 100 kN machine. Building them as a matched pair means they run at the same speed and hold the same way.
How do the two winches stay in step?
Both winches are built to the same drawing with the same motor, gearbox and drum, and are controlled together so the ropes pay in at the same rate. Rope tension is monitored during the haul so any difference is corrected before the cradle skews.
What holds the cradle on the slipway grade?
Each winch has a spring-applied brake that engages the instant the motor stops or power is lost. With two winches the cradle is held on two independent brakes, each rated above the load it carries.
What rope capacity do the winches have?
Each drum stores 140 m of rope, enough for the full length of the slipway from the water to the hardstand with margin. Longer slipways can be accommodated with a larger drum on the same frame.
Were the winches tested before delivery?
Yes. Both winches were load tested together at Yatala to AS 1418, with brake holding and rope pull verified and certificates issued so they could go straight onto the yard’s plant register.
