Anchor Windlass Project Overview

Custom-built 30 kN hydraulic anchor windlasses for a commercial transport barge

Two 30 kN hydraulic anchor windlasses for a commercial transport barge, built to Lloyd’s rules and tested in accordance with them. Each windlass is a chain gypsy type to suit 26 mm stud link anchor chain, with a hydraulic motor and gearbox driving the gypsy, a manual band brake with handwheel to hold the chain, and a warping head for handling mooring lines. The pair were built to the same drawing, painted in marine grey and delivered as a set with their hydraulic control valves. Engineered, manufactured and tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown

An in-depth look at the 30 kN studlink anchor windlass's performance and technical capabilities

Each windlass has a chain gypsy machined to the 26 mm stud link chain profile so every link seats correctly as the anchor is hauled, with a chain stripper to guide the chain into the locker. A hydraulic motor drives the gypsy through a heavy gearbox on a fabricated marine steel base, and a warping head on the outboard end handles mooring and towing lines. The band brake on the gypsy is applied by handwheel and holds the anchor chain when the drive is stopped.

Designing to Lloyd’s rules set the material grades, brake holding capacity, gypsy strength and test loads, and both windlasses were tested at Yatala in accordance with those rules before delivery, with the hydraulic control valves and documentation supplied for the barge builder. Marine coatings and stainless fittings were used throughout for life on an open deck.

Other Winch Applications

Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.

Beyond marine transport, hydraulic anchor windlasses of this type suit dredges, work barges and pontoons that anchor with stud link chain and need class-approved equipment.

Marine Corps
Line 182

Anchor handling and chain windlasses for trawlers and fishing vessels – gypsy wheels matched to the chain size and built for constant saltwater service.

Line 182

Mooring and anchor handling for barges, pontoons and offshore support vessels – hydraulic windlasses built and certified to class rules where required.

Project Conclusion

The 30 kN stud link anchor windlasses gave the barge a matched pair of class-rule anchoring machines with chain gypsies, band brakes and warping heads in one compact unit each. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.

Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

The two hydraulic windlasses Australian Certified Winches built for our transport barge were designed to Lloyd's rules and tested to match before they left Yatala. The gypsies fit our 26 mm studlink chain perfectly and anchor handling has been smooth from the first voyage.

Marine Superintendent, Barge Transport
We asked for windlasses that would satisfy class and stand up to a working barge, and that is what ACW delivered. Hydraulic drive off the barge power pack, solid chain gypsies and full certification paperwork. Good Australian marine engineering.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about anchor windlasses for barges and workboats.

What is a chain gypsy windlass?

A windlass that hauls anchor chain on a toothed wheel, the gypsy, machined to the chain’s link size so each link is gripped positively rather than relying on friction. These units were machined for 26 mm stud link chain.

The classification rules set the material grades, design loads, brake holding capacity and test procedures for anchoring equipment. ACW designed the windlasses to those rules and tested them at Yatala in accordance with them so the barge could be classed.

A manual band brake on the gypsy, applied by handwheel, holds the chain independently of the hydraulic drive. The anchor load is carried by the brake and chain stopper, not by hydraulic pressure.

The smooth drum on the outboard end of the windlass shaft handles mooring and towing lines. Crew take turns of rope around it and the windlass hauls the line, in the same way a capstan does.

Yes. The gypsy is machined to the chain, so windlasses can be built for other stud link or short link chain sizes and for electric or hydraulic drive, with class-rule design and testing where the vessel requires it.
