30 kN Hydraulic Trawler Try Winch
30 kN Hydraulic Trawler Try Winch
A 30 kN hydraulic trawler try winch built in Yatala for commercial fishing, driven from the vessel's hydraulic system with 100 m of rope capacity and marine-grade protection for constant saltwater service.
Trawler Try Winch Project Overview
A custom-built 30 kN hydraulic try winch for commercial trawling
A 30 kN hydraulic try winch for a commercial prawn trawler, built in stainless steel to live on an open working deck. A try winch runs the small test net that skippers tow alongside the main gear to check what is on the bottom before committing to a full shot, so it is worked constantly through a trip and has to be quick, controllable and immune to salt water. The winch runs from the vessel’s hydraulic system, carries 100 m of rope on a compact drum and was installed on deck among the existing net drums. Engineered, manufactured and tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown
An in-depth look at the 30 kN hydraulic trawler try winch's performance and technical capabilities
The winch frame, drum and side plates are stainless steel, welded and finished to shrug off salt water and fish product without paint. The drum is sized for 100 m of rope at 30 kN with a rope guide and a low mounting so the try net line runs cleanly off the stern quarter, and the whole unit bolts to a deck plate between the existing net drums.
A hydraulic motor drives the drum through a gearbox and connects to the trawler’s hydraulic system with standard fittings, giving the fast retrieval speed a try net needs while a counterbalance valve controls pay-out and a brake holds the line when the control is released. The winch was tested at Yatala, then installed on deck and connected to the vessel hydraulics.
Other Winch Applications
Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.
Beyond commercial fishing, compact stainless hydraulic winches suit research vessels, work boats and aquaculture operations that handle lines from a wet deck.
Sampling, deployment and recovery winches for offshore support vessels and platforms – hydraulic drive with marine-grade protection and class certification where required.
Cable deployment and equipment recovery for offshore wind and tidal energy vessels – compact hydraulic winches built for saltwater exposure.
Project Conclusion
The 30 kN hydraulic trawler try winch gives the skipper a fast, corrosion-proof winch for the most frequently used net on the boat. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.
Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about trawler try winches and deck-mounted hydraulic winches.
What is a try winch used for?
It works the try net, a small test net towed beside the main gear so the skipper can see what is on the bottom before shooting the full nets. Because the try net is hauled many times a night, its winch has to be fast, easy to control and reliable.
Why stainless steel?
A trawler deck is permanently wet with salt water and fish product, and painted steel does not last. Stainless frames, drums and side plates keep the winch working for years without recoating.
Does the winch run from the boat's hydraulics?
Yes. It connects to the vessel’s existing hydraulic system with standard fittings, so no separate power unit is needed. ACW matched the motor to the pressure and flow available on board.
How much rope does it carry?
The drum stores 100 m of rope at 30 kN line pull, which suits try net depths on the prawn grounds. Drum size and rope diameter can be changed for other vessels and fisheries.
Can the winch be fitted around existing deck gear?
Yes. The compact frame was designed to bolt to a deck plate between the trawler’s net drums, and ACW can adapt the footprint, rope exit and hose positions to suit other deck layouts.
Rigging a Trawler?
Tell us the vessel, the net loads and the hydraulic supply. Our RPEQ engineers will size a certified try winch for it.
