35 kN Electric Slipway Hauling Winch
35 kN Electric Slipway Hauling Winch
A 35 kN electric slipway hauling winch built in Yatala for a commercial slipway, hauling vessels up the cradle rails with 100 m of rope, marine-grade coated steel and a fail-safe brake for controlled haul-outs.
Slipway Winch Project Overview
A custom-built 35 kN electric hauling winch for a commercial slipway
A 35 kN electric hauling winch for a commercial slipway, built to bring vessels up the cradle rails under smooth, variable speed control. The winch itself is a compact blue unit with a yellow guard, but much of the engineering went into the control system: a purpose-built electrical cabinet with a Lenze variable speed drive, a front panel with local and remote selection, in and out controls and a speed dial, so the slipway operator can haul from the winch house or from a remote position where the cradle can be seen. The winch carries 100 m of rope in a marine-grade finish and was built and tested at our Yatala, Queensland workshop.

Operational & Technical Breakdown
An in-depth look at the 35 kN electric slipway hauling winch's performance and technical capabilities
The winch is a fabricated steel frame with a grooved drum for 100 m of rope at 35 kN, a gearbox and a single-phase electric motor, coated for the salt air of a slipway and fitted with a yellow drum guard. A spring-applied brake on the drive holds the cradle on the grade whenever the motor stops or power is lost.
The control cabinet is where this project differs from a basic winch. A Lenze variable speed drive gives smooth acceleration and adjustable line speed, the door-mounted panel carries an emergency stop, a local-off-remote selector, winch in and winch out buttons and a speed control, and a remote station lets the operator stand where the vessel and cradle are visible. All wiring is labelled and the cabinet is rated for the marine environment, and the complete system was tested at Yatala before installation.
Other Winch Applications
Versatile winching solutions across multiple industries.
Beyond marine, a slipway winch with variable speed and remote control suits boat ramps, ship lifts and any inclined haul where the operator needs to watch the load rather than the winch.
Haul-out winches for trawler and fishing fleet slipways at working harbours – marine-grade electric winches sized for the heaviest vessel in the fleet.
Cradle and trolley hauling in boat-building yards and fabrication shops – electric hauling winches with variable speed for controlled, repeatable moves.
Project Conclusion
The 35 kN electric slipway hauling winch shows how a well-designed control system turns a simple winch into a safe, precise haul-out machine. Designed, built and tested in Yatala by Australian Certified Winches.
Like every winch we build, it was designed to AS 1418, the Australian Standard for cranes, hoists and winches, and signed off by our RPEQ-registered engineers before load testing in Yatala.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about variable speed slipway winches and their controls.
Why fit a variable speed drive to a slipway winch?
Vessels have to be started gently on the cradle and slowed as they reach the top of the slipway. A variable speed drive gives smooth acceleration and lets the operator set the haul speed to suit the vessel, rather than running flat out or stopped.
What does local-off-remote mean on the control panel?
The selector chooses whether the winch is operated from the panel on the cabinet, from a remote station where the cradle can be seen, or is isolated. It stops two people trying to operate the winch at once.
How is the cradle held on the slipway?
A spring-applied brake on the winch drive engages whenever the motor stops or power is lost, holding the cradle on the grade. The variable speed drive also brings the load to a controlled stop before the brake sets.
Why single-phase power?
Many slipways only have single-phase power in the winch house. The motor and drive were selected to deliver 35 kN from that supply so no new three-phase cabling was needed.
Can the control system be fitted to an existing winch?
Often, yes. ACW can build a variable speed control cabinet with local and remote stations to suit an existing electric slipway winch, provided the motor is suitable, and will test the system before installation.
